Action star’s highest-grossing movie will receive the best sequel ever — but when?

Summary:

  • Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently teased Tom Cruise’s upcoming films, including new Mission and Top Gun.
  • Tom Cruise approved Top Gun 3’s story and will star in the movie after he’s done with his current projects.
  • Top Gun: Maverick proved to be Cruise’s most successful movie, raking up $1.5B and 99% ratings.

There are countless reasons why Tom Cruise is an action legend. In his Mission: Impossible movies, the actor set several world records for the most dangerous stunts in cinema history. With Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise saved theaters and the industry at large from going broke amid the pandemic — and raked up quite a box office haul.

Both these franchises just received great updates, but the latter is more interesting.

Producer Teases Top Gun 3 with Tom Cruise

Recently, producer Jerry Bruckheimer addressed Tom Cruise’s current and upcoming projects. According to him, Top Gun 3 is very much planned, and it’s only a matter of the star actor’s availability — because once you let Tom Cruise lead your franchise to ridiculous box office success, you’ll not let someone else take his place.

“Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for [Top Gun 3], and [Tom] said, ‘I really like that,’ so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now; he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back,” Bruckheimer told Screen Rant.

It seems like Top Gun 3 is inevitably coming — but considering Tom Cruise’s busy schedule, the movie will be quite some years in the making before it’s released.

Top Gun: Maverick Dominated Box Office

The producer’s eagerness to work with Cruise again and make another Top Gun film together is understandable: the second movie — and the star actor’s debut in this franchise — shattered all box office expectations and raked up almost $1.5B against its reasonably small budget of $173M. And that was during the COVID-19 pandemic!

The movie was exceptionally well-received, too. On Rotten Tomatoes, Top Gun: Maverick boasts a 99% Top Critic Score — and a 99% Audience Score to match! As far as numbers and critics are concerned, Maverick is Tom Cruise’s best and most successful movie, and if the trend keeps up, Top Gun 3 won’t disappoint us, either.

That is, when Cruise gets around to making it. He’s one really busy actor.
