"I've made some empty promises in my life, but hands down that was the most generous."

Summary:

  • There is one The Office episode that divides fans, with some of them refusing to rewatch it, while others consider it one of the funniest ones in the show.
  • It follows Michael Scott in his struggle to confess to the students of breaking his promise to pay for their college tuition.
  • Many fans suggest it’s completely justified by Michael’s nature, with this episode presenting a hilariously written culmination of his careless deeds.

The Office is notorious for using cringe for the good, which results in extremely hilarious conversations. However, this mockumentary sitcom sometimes doesn’t know the limits where it can be cringe enough not to be funny, but rather excruciating even for the most loyal fans.

In particular, there is one infamous episode, which takes humiliation humor to a whole other level, and that’s why it’s hated by a certain part of the fandom and even called the most disturbing moment of the series, impossible to rewatch.

It starts by stating that long ago Steve Carell’s Michael Scott promised several students to pay their full college tuition, thinking he’d be a millionaire by that time. However, it turned out to be an empty promise, so he goes to the school to confess he won’t do it.

There he faces grateful students who thank their generous sponsor, and the suspense of waiting for Michael finally uncovering the truth, drawn out as long as possible, becomes reminiscent of a horror movie, with a final blowout of breaking the news.

Seeing Scott’s awkward attempts to find a way out of his own guilt can be a torture for somebody, while this episode is really funny for those who can get the whole point of it.

Titled Scott’s Tots, it’s often defended by fans, who are sure that “it’s funny because it’s cringe inducing,” as admitted by Redditor @tenamonth.

It can be considered as the apotheosis of Michael’s inability to measure his own capabilities or simply stupidity, with all his flaws culminating in this incredibly awkward, yet hilarious episode.

“I get why it can be considered cringe for a lot of people, but I cannot stop laughing during the entire thing,” shares @Rude_Shoulder764.

However, some of the episode’s enjoyers don’t get the hate it receives, stating those who don’t understand the message of Scott’s Tots don’t understand the whole show.

Indeed, the very storyline of Carell’s character is full of never-ending cringe, with more or less of it produced by his ridiculous behavior in literally every episode of The Office.
