But it still may be the Targaryens that caused the whole mess.

Summary:

  • Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon ’s most fascinating feature is surely their fantastic creatures represented by gigantic dragons that became the whole symbol of the House of Targaryen.
  • Though the dragons are thought to be mostly allies in the Targaryens’ wars for power, they’re much more attached to the family.
  • Despite their immense strength, the dragons weren’t able to overcome their own crisis and thus may have become the main cause of their master’s downfall.

Game of Thrones and its not less successful prequel House of the Dragon are all about realistic medieval vibes until their main fantastic feature comes up on stage. With the help of gigantic dragons that have been like a part of the Targaryens’ family all along, the fight for the ultimate power takes even more drastic turns.

And while House of the Dragon shows the Targaryens thriving and taking advantage of the strength they’re given by their peculiar pets, Game of Thrones is a lot different about this matter — and may even prove that dragons eventually caused the Targaryens’ end.

Though it may seem like dragons in George R.R. Martin’s universe are just there to help when the fight is about to start, the bond with their masters is much deeper than it appears to be. The dragon usually receives its rider when it’s still inside the egg — the latter would be placed in Targaryen or Velaryon cradle right until it hatches and then the newborn creature becomes its master’s real friend.

Despite that, Game of Thrones proves another side of the whole story when the egg doesn’t hatch and then ends up being almost unbreakable — in this case it’s Daenerys who was the only one to succeed with old eggs awaking her dragons Drogon, Rhaegal, and Vhagar.

The reason why dragons were still quite rare and there were obviously not enough of them for all the members of the family is that traditionally it was a female dragon that could lay eggs, though in the book it was hinted that dragons could somehow change their gender.

The Targaryens Basically Shot Themselves in the Leg

Consequently, the fantastic creatures would come along in fewer and fewer numbers which may indicate that there were not so many female dragons able to lay eggs after all. On top of that, the Targaryens themselves contributed to their dragons’ reproducing crisis as some of them were killed in an attempt to prevent an upcoming war that the dragons would be a significant part of anyway.

With all the variety of reasons, the dragons eventually never got to be reliable in terms of their quantity or even survivability given that another part of them died young not being able to grow up enough to enter the epic fights.

Surprisingly, the fall of the creatures was almost immediately followed by the fall of their masters, and both shows show it quite clearly — if in House of the Dragon the Targaryens are already split, but still numerous to rule over the vast territory, in Game of Thrones their amount is limited to Daenerys, her brother who later on dies and Jon Snow.

Sadly, the Targaryens from House of the Dragon were not aware about life-hacks that could revive their dragons’ kin — and if they had used some black magic like Daenerys did, their power wouldn’t have been lost that soon.
