With the difference that this time the historical drama takes some extreme measures.

Summary:

  • The new historical drama Mary & George starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Golitzine may become a perfect match for those who have previously enjoyed shows like The Crown or Bridgerton.
  • The series follows the mother and the son who hatch a plot to become closer to King James I and make him some sort of their puppet on the way to obtain more wealth and titles.
  • The show will be released on Starz on April 5, but many of those who have already seen it have praised both leading actors’ performances.

Royal drama series are having their prime moment — and we’re here for it. With The Crown having come to its end last December and Bridgerton keeping the fans waiting till it arrives in May, there’s one more story like this for those who enjoy savoring webs of intrigues at the king’s court.

Mary & George stars Julianne Moore and Nicholas Golitzine as mother and son who are welcome in high places of the Royal Society at King James I’s court in the 1600s.

However good their social status seems to be, the Countess of Buckingham, portrayed by Moore, thinks that they can do better — and then she talks her son George into seducing the king and thus becoming the main source of influence on his way to rule the country.

The tricky plan is supposed to help the Countess and her son to come even closer to the king’s circles and get even more money and titles than any other Englishman has ever had.

Moore Steals the Show in Mary & George

Julianne Moore isn’t shy enough to stay away from such controversial roles like in Mary & George — she has recently starred in a drama May December alongside Natalie Portman where Moore portrayed a woman who raped a 13-year-old boy and later married him thus forming a weird but seemingly happy family with three children.

In Mary & George, according to those who already got to see the series, she delivers a powerful performance balancing in between her character’s fierce desire to obtain power and horrendous dread of failing the plan.

Nicholas Golitzine, in his turn, has recently been at everyone’s hearing thanks to the leading role in the romcom The Idea of You where he starred alongside Anne Hathaway. As some viewers highlight, Golitzine isn’t left behind by Moore in the series, but quite the contrary — their performances are on the same level.

Mary & George is coming to Starz on April 5.
