The Golden Raspberry is one of the most important industry anti-prizes. Every year, the worst movies of the season are nominated for it: from failed blockbusters to dramas that look more like comedies. But often the winners are simply misunderstood masterpieces.
Some of these underrated films were chosen by Reddit users.
1. The Blair Witch Project, 1999
Can you believe it? The movie that changed the horror industry was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Anti-Award in the category Worst Picture. Maybe, from a certain point of view, even this kind of PR benefits the movie, but to be honest, The Blair Witch Project had no chance to "win" that year – it was up against Adam Sandler 's Big Daddy, The Haunting, and Will Smith 's Wild Wild West.
2. The Bodyguard, 1992
It is safe to say that the cult melodrama has become Kevin Costner's acting calling card. His unforgettable screen duet with the young Whitney Houston had no fans of romantic movies indifferent.
The image of an unbelievably serious and dedicated bodyguard who loses control of the situation due to flaring emotions captivated the audience along with the immortal hit I Will Always Love You.
Surprisingly, The Bodyguard received seven Golden Raspberry nominations, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Kevin Costner) and Worst Actress (Whitney Houston).
3. The Shining, 1980
Despite Stephen King 's best efforts to downplay the value of Kubrick's version of The Shining, and even an attempt to release his own adaptation of the book, the horror of the creepy Overlook Hotel and its dead inhabitants remains an undisputed example of the genre.
The Shining received two Golden Raspberry nominations for Worst Director (Stanley Kubrick) and Worst Actress (Shelley Duvall). As a result, the film cemented Kubrick's status as a great director, and Shelley Duvall's role became one of the most iconic in horror film history.
4. Friday the 13th, 1980
The cult slasher film that everyone associates with the famous hockey-masked maniac Jason Voorhees was a huge hit with audiences in the 1980s and spawned many sequels. All the more unexpected was its nomination for the Golden Raspberry for Worst Picture.
Now, of course, few people will be impressed by the movie's brutal scenes, but at the time it was one of the pioneers of the genre and it was quite strange to see it on the list of nominees. Friday the 13th participated in the very first Golden Raspberry Awards, where only 10 films were nominated.
5. Last Action Hero, 1993
Nominated for a Golden Raspberry, Last Action Hero now belongs to the rare genre of meta-blockbusters that are aware of their simplicity. The script, written by Shane Black, not only goes through the main cliches of the genre, but also mocks Arnold Schwarzenegger himself and his legacy as the star of typical but popular action films of the 1980s.
Schwarzenegger obviously handled the role of Jack Slater flawlessly, proving that, unlike his colleagues, he is not afraid to laugh at himself.
