Jim Carrey’s Movie From 30 Years Ago Has the Most Offensive Scene Possible

Jim Carrey may have been a comedy veteran for more than 30 years having totally transformed the genre and bringing a lot of iconic comic characters to the screen, but some of his movies stir up a feud to this day.

Though one particular film dates back to 1994 when something that was quite normal now seems offensive, the actor’s opinion about one controversial moment in the movie hasn’t changed over the years — and this is what infuriates everyone the most.

The actor’s Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was released 30 years ago and, apart from contributing to Jim Carrey’s skyrocketed career, became a box office hit grossing more than $100 million with the initial budget of only $15 million.

The critics were harsher though, giving the movie 47% on Rotten Tomatoes — and a major reason for that may be the scene that meets all the intolerance criteria right now.

In the film, Jim Carrey’s character once appears alongside a trans woman played by Sean Young. Eventually the latter is exposed and undressed before the passers-by that express nothing but their aversion.

The scene also caused some fuss during the movie’s release back in 1994, but Carrey aggravated the whole situation by misgendering both Sean Young and the character and saying that kissing a man was supposed to get “the biggest, most obnoxious, homophobic reaction ever recorded.”

Though the times have radically changed and now the film’s scene seems to be even more offensive for the queer community than before, none of everyone involved in the movie ever had an attempt to apologize.

Worse than that, several years ago Jim Carrey confirmed that over the course of time his opinion about the scene and the way the audience had perceived it hadn’t changed — as the actor put it, the movie was pretending to make fun of homophobia by creating a seemingly ridiculous scene.

The finishing touch of his yet another repulsive confession was that he still called both character and actress a man saying that he “kissed a dude.”

Despite Carrey’s attempts to defend the movie’s idea, it still sounded very transphobic to most fans, however he put it.

Though he hasn’t talked about this fiasco ever since 2019, this still may be a reason why the actor doesn’t get to appear in potentially successful projects (Sonic the Hedgehog doesn’t seem to be his merit).
