Skeldale House is about to become a very busy place!

Summary

  • All Creatures Great and Small is officially back for its fifth and sixth seasons.
  • PBS has announced the return of many characters. But will Tristan be back?
  • Season 5 will hit small screens in the UK in the fall of 2024 and in the US in early 2025.

It's time to rejoice, cozy drama fans! All Creatures Great and Small, the British series about the staff of Skeldale House and their vibrant life in the Yorkshire Dales in the mid-20th century, will return for at least two more seasons, PBS officially announced in February 2024.

Both PBS and Channel 5 are slowly revealing more and more exciting details, including the answer to one of the most anxiously sought-after fan questions: will Tristan return to the series after his absence in the previous season?

Will Tristan Be Back for Another Season

The third season concluded with a heartbreaking cliffhanger as Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) decided to enlist in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps to prove his worth and contribute to his country's war effort. Although the series does not follow the book in every detail, it is worth noting that Tristan did not die in the war. The real Tristan, Brian Sinclair, joined the Royal Army Veterinary Corps in 1944. He cared for military animals and wasn't involved in actual combat. And so, the younger Farnon will return to Darrowby at last. This time as a much more mature man.

PBS has officially announced that Callum Woodhouse will be returning for Season 5. It is not yet known if Tristan will have completed his service in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps or if he will only be able to return for a short time. In any case, we are very happy!

In addition to the core cast of Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot, Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon, Rachel Shenton as Helen Herriot and Anna Madeley as Mrs Hall, new characters introduced in the fourth season, Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose) and Mrs. Pumphrey (Patricia Hodge), will also return to the series.

What Can We Expect from the New Season

Before we get into speculation about the release of the upcoming season of All Creatures Great and Small, let's first talk about what we can expect from a storytelling standpoint.

Channel 5 only said that 'the series will continue to bring the stories of James Herriot to life as we return to Darrowby to join our unconventional much-loved Skeldale Family and the colourful ensemble of farmers, animals and townsfolk living in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1940s.'

However, it is safe to say that Tristan will remain with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, although he is likely to return to Skelldale at some point, James will continue his work at the RAF training base, and Mrs Hall will probably continue to win hearts. Also, after the Christmas rush, we can expect more storylines about the new addition to the Herriot family, as James and Helen have a baby boy and the first footage of Helen with the pram has been released.

When Season 5 Will Be Released

Alas, the exact release date is still unknown and Channel 5 has yet to release any details. However, considering that each season has been released in September/October, and that the UK was not affected by the American WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year, there is no reason not to believe that the new season will be released in the fall of 2024.

However, this only applies to the UK release on Channel 5 and My5. US residents (i.e. PBS Masterpiece users) will have to wait a bit longer, judging by the experience of previous seasons, unless of course they use a VPN.

Usually new seasons are available a few months after the UK release, so we can expect US residents to be able to watch All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 in January 2025.
