Timothée Chalamet might just have an Anya Taylor-Joy-shaped problem on his hands.

Summary:

  • George Miller’s upcoming Furiosa is a prequel to his 2015 Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road.
  • First critic reviews are already in, and they’re overwhelmingly positive so far, praising the director and star actors.
  • Most critics refrain from comparing Furiosa to Fury Road, claiming both these movies are great in their own ways.

Nearly a decade after the overwhelming success of Mad Mad: Fury Road, George Miller knockouts the theaters with its prequel — Furiosa, the story of Mad Max’s unlikely and fierce ally. The early reviews are rolling in, and the critics don’t hold back: here’s what the industry’s biggest connoisseurs are saying about the Anya Taylor-Joy-led post-apocalyptic action adventure.

Furiosa Basks in Overwhelming Praise

There’s one thing you should know right off the bat: we have tried to find negative reviews but the task proved near-impossible. George Miller outdid himself with the Oscar-winning original’s prequel, and the critics are absolutely in love with Furiosa.

“As good as I expected Furiosa to be, I think it might be better. Pure cinema bliss that’s wonderful on its own & makes Fury Road better as well. The action is so beyond I was literally laughing with delight. Details so weird and beautiful I can’t believe they exist. Just mwah,” Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier wrote.

His colleagues from other outlets largely support his claims, praising Furiosa for its gritty and grounded nature, violent and unhinged clashes, and outstanding performances from both lead actors, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. But one question still lingers on every Mad Max fan’s mind: is it better than Fury Road or not?

Is Furiosa Better Than 2015’s Fury Road?

As much as it’s praised and adored by the critics, Furiosa has some incredibly huge boots to fill. Mad Max: Fury Road is often dubbed as the best action movie ever, and it’s a marvelous Oscar-winning chaos. But as tempting as comparing the two films might seem, most critics agree that they should be largely treated separately.

“Is Furiosa better than Fury Road? My initial reaction is no, but with a caveat. <...> The actual stories themselves aren’t easy to compare. There’s more world building, a little less action, and much more of an emotional punch in Furiosa compared to Fury Road. And that’s what makes Furiosa great on its own terms,” Cinema Tweets remarked.

They also stated that Furiosa is “a worthy competitor to Dune: Part 2 for best film of 2024,” featuring perhaps the best performances of both Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth’s entire careers. If that doesn’t sound promising as all hells to you, we don’t know what will — because for now, we’re definitely hyped for this movie.

Furiosa will hit the theaters on May 24, 2024.
