The Ghoul might be a mysterious person that exists in every Fallout game and remains an enigma even decades later.

Summary:

  • The Ghoul is the most enigmatic character in Prime Video ’s Fallout TV show.
  • All Fallout video games have a perk that summons the Mysterious Stranger to aid the player in combat encounters.
  • A recent fan theory suggests that The Ghoul and the Mysterious Stranger are the same person, but not everything adds up in this claim.

In Prime Video’s Fallout TV show, The Ghoul is not your average stranger. This mysterious man is a feared bounty hunter, a fierce warrior, and an enigma throughout the first season: even as you learn more about him, it still feels like you’ve barely tapped into his centuries-long story and have no clue about what he’s been through during his countless adventures and hunts.

But one recent fan theory makes an excellent job of answering one question about The Ghoul… And raising countless others.

Have We Already Met The Ghoul?

According to Reddit user JudgeKhan’s speculation, everyone who’s played a Fallout game at least once has already met The Ghoul before Prime Video’s TV show. Wait, scratch that. Everyone who has played a Fallout game and picked a very specific perk at least once has already met The Ghoul before Prime Video’s TV show.

Do you see what we’re getting at?

Mysterious Stranger is a perk that exists in all the Fallout video games. Its nature is rather simple: during a combat encounter, an unexpected ally occasionally appears when you’re using V.A.T.S., helping you dispatch your enemies and then disappearing again. What if The Ghoul and the Mysterious Stranger are one person?

Could The Ghoul Be the Stranger?

On the one hand, there are a few arguments in favor of this theory. The Ghoul is something of a Wasteland celebrity, meaning it’s unlikely that we have never come across him or heard about him in the six main Fallout games previously.

The Ghoul’s age, 250 years and counting, also justifies his presence in all video games; and his impressive combat skills add to the pile of reasons why he could be the Stranger.

However, there’s one big reason why The Ghoul can’t be the Mysterious Stranger: the Fallout series never implied that, and from what we’ve seen, it would have done so if that was true. Prime Video’s TV show loves its video game references and has dozens of them — so if (or when?) the Mysterious Stranger appears, we’ll know it.

Ask yourself: have you heard the famous “jingle jangle jingle” when The Ghoul first appeared or seen him wear the Stranger’s iconic trenchcoat? Didn’t think so.
