Even though there are many period dramas which focus on the romanticized versions of aristocratic lives, like Downton Abbey or Bridgerton, there actually is a smaller niche that explores history from the angle that not many pay a lot of the attention to.
Vikings, originally produced by History channel, takes a deep dive into the life of Ragnar Lothbrok, a legendary Viking hero and a Swedish and Danish king. Packed with both drama and action, the series is now finally coming to Netflix.
Is Vikings on Netflix?
The story begins with Ragnar being a young farmer and dedicated family man, who happens to be unhappy with the politics of Earl Haraldson, who sends the Viking raids east and loses men fighting Russia and the Baltic countries, instead of going west and exploring more of the unknown lands, building next civilizations.
Thus begins his path to success, ruling people as a great warrior and conqueror of lands, claiming to be a direct descendant of the god Odin. First released back in 2013, the show lasted for 6 seasons and ended back in 2020. However, the story was later picked up by Netflix for a sequel, Vikings: Valhalla.
Led by Travis Fimmel as Ragnar Lothbrok, Katheryn Winnick as his first wife Lagertha, and Gustaf Skarsgård as Ragnar's eccentric friend Floki, the entire cast has perfectly transformed into their characters, giving some legendary characters a human face.
The show stands with a 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, followed by an 88% audience score. Unlike many shows that tend to lose their appeal over the years, Vikings has managed to increase its quality and ended the show with its 6th season landing at a 100% mark.
Since Netflix had the production rights to the show's sequel, the streaming platform also got the rights to distribute the original series. This happened back in 2021, but Vikings fans had to wait 3 years before they could actually get access to the show. Fortunately, the wait is over.
